What is keyword research?

When you have a specific set of content in your website and you want people to visit your website using search engines, keyword is the only way in which they can reach you.



In the above picture, COOKIE is the keyword that user searched for in google search engine and the first two results appeared in search engine are organic search results( ranked by google) according to its content, keyword usage, information in the pages and many SEO aspects. 

When it comes keyword research, first we have to form set of keywords that are related to our website content. For example: if your website is about digital marketing services, you should form a set of long tail keyword that are relatable to your website like: Digital marketing consultant, SEO consultant, Social media content scheduler etc and once after collecting the set of keywords we have to use that keyword in our website like adding it two our SEO title, Meta tags, URLs, Blog post, in our content, by adding keywords like this, google crawler will get information easily from our website. The major goal is to make our site easy to crawl.

Once, after creating related keywords to our website, Use keyword tools like:

  • Google keyword planner
  • SEMrush
  • Ahrefs
  • Answer the public 

And many more keyword tools which ever you find its useful for you, to know about what are the alternate keyword that are searched for your type of content.

By seeing this you will get to know about user search preferences on the particular keyword. Now what we have to do is to get search preferences from similar websites using the set of keyword that we formed and maintain a spread sheet like this. 



 

This will be an ideal format to do a keyword research you have to decide the core keyword and then variation for that topic followed by modifiers and location. So if it is digital marketing then:

Core keyword will be – Digital marketing 

Variation will be – Consultant 

Modifier will be – Top, best, online etc. 

Location – Where you are living or where are you targeting.

By using this you will have a set of long tail keywords which can be used in your website and to monitor keywords that your website are ranking for use tools like:

  • SEMrush
  • Google search console 
  • Ahrefs

 

Register your domain in this tools and get to know about your ranking status of your keyword, sometimes you will rank for a keyword in your content which was not intentionally but is appears anyway because users are searching that keyword in search engine result page.

 

 

Competitor analysis.

When we are into a business or service lots of people are doing to already and how we can be competitive with them is what competitor analysis.

First of all we have to find who our competitor is and to do that the key points are:

  • Gather all data of your competitor 
  • Identify your top competitors, in this also go for big companies to know their level of performance.
  • Calculate your capacity against big companies 
  • Find the nature of the competitor whether direct or indirect  

It’s better to collect both direct and in-direct competitors data’s for our reference. Identifying softer targets is also an important part because google shows the higher level competitors. To find low or medium range targets use web tools like 

  • SEMrush
  • Ahrefs
  • Ubersuggest
  • Spyfu
  • Serpstat                                                                      

Now we know our competitor we should analysis the following metrics:

  • What are the organic keywords
  • What is the organic monthly traffic
  • What is the domain score of the website
  • What are their link resource 

By using tools like SEMrush and Serpstat we can find our competitor average monthly visit, page views, bounce rate, time spend on site, traffic by countries, traffic resource.





 

Now after analyzing all these, we have to find high ROI (return of investment) keyword opportunity for our site by gathering our competitor keywords and start filtering the keywords and then to decide which organic keyword we are going to use.

Analyse paid keywords for individual sites and form keyword cluster using variation, modifiers etc.

Right now we have information we know like:

  • The keywords with which they got more traffic
  • How well the keyword benefits their process
  • Our competitor SEO data and strategy
  • Highest ROI keyword strategy.  

 

Now we retrieved the data for a competitor analysis to come out with the successful keywords for our website, we also want to consider SEO factors like On-page and Off-page SEO.
